Çatalca Ormanlı Rice

İstanbul

Uncooked white rice from the Ormanlı area of Çatalca, known for its glassy grains and distinctive aroma.

Last updated:

Çatalca Ormanlı pirinci is rice produced from Japonica paddy grown in the defined Ormanlı, Karacaköy and Çiftlikköy area of Çatalca. It is classified as long-grain Type C rice. This guide covers the dry, milled white grain; the regional name is not a synonym for every Baldo rice or for cooked rice.

Types & forms

Dry milled white rice

Measure the dry, uncooked milled grain when the recipe specifies dry rice.

Paddy and cooked rice

Unmilled paddy retains its husk; cooked rice has absorbed water. Neither can replace a dry milled-rice quantity directly.

What to look for when buying

  • Look for the full Çatalca Ormanlı pirinci name and traceable origin, with the harvest year, grain class and broken-grain information on the package.
  • Choose dry, clean grains in sound packaging. Do not identify the origin or cultivar from the appearance alone.

Prepare & cook

  • Pick over the grain and follow the package or recipe for rinsing and soaking.
  • Use the liquid amount and cooking method written for your recipe and rice product; the regional name alone does not give a universal water ratio.
  • After any instructed soaking, drain as the recipe directs before cooking.

Store it well

  • Keep the dry rice sealed in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and pests.
  • Follow the package’s storage and best-before information; keep wet measuring tools out of the container.

Substitutions depend on the dish

Another pilaf rice

It may suit the dish, but its water absorption and texture can differ. Follow instructions appropriate to that rice rather than copying a ratio blindly.

Baldo or short-grain rice

These are separately named rice identities. Do not relabel them as Ormanlı rice or assume the regional name establishes one of these varieties.

Nutrition

This guide does not substitute a generic rice analysis for this regional product; use the nutrition label on the rice you buy.

At the Turkish table

The Ormanlı plain is one of Istanbul’s rice-growing areas. This regional rice connects Çatalca’s farming landscape with the city’s grain and pilaf traditions.
