Peas (frozen)

Shelled green peas stored frozen, ready to measure and cook according to the package.

Last updated:

This guide is for plain frozen green peas before final preparation. Frozen does not mean ready to eat. Dried split peas, fresh peas in pods and peas in a seasoned sauce have different handling and nutrition.

Types & forms

Plain frozen green peas

Shelled peas sold frozen; the nutrition record is for this unprepared form.

Cooked peas · comparison

Heating and any added salt, fat or sauce change the prepared portion.

Dried split peas · comparison

A dried pulse requiring a different cooking method; not a substitute for a quick-cooking green pea.

What to look for when buying

  • Choose an intact frozen pack labeled plain green peas. Read the cooking instructions and check whether salt or sauce is included.
  • Keep frozen purchases cold on the journey home and return them promptly to the freezer.

Prepare & cook

  • Measure out the needed amount and follow the package’s cooking method, including whether to cook from frozen. Do not rely on thawing alone when cooking is required.
  • For a cold salad, cook as directed, then cool promptly before combining with the other ingredients. Avoid prolonged cooking that makes the peas lose their distinct shape.

Store it well

  • Keep at 0°F or below, with the opened pack tightly closed to limit drying. Follow package quality guidance.
  • Refrigerate cooked peas promptly in a covered container; storage instructions for frozen food do not apply after preparation.

Substitutions depend on the dish

Fresh shelled green peas

A suitable variation when cooked until tender; preparation time and edible yield differ from a frozen pack.

Canned green peas

Already cooked and usually softer. Drain, check added salt and add at a stage that avoids breaking them up.
